Make it yourself baking powder and brown sugar

Have you ever gotten all exicted about making a new cake, cookie or sweet or savory bread recipe and forgot to check your pantry? You get part way through your recipe, too late to turn back and doh. oh  no brown sugar no baking powder..oh dear.

Yeah me too..drat! And with little ones under foot and one functioning car that DH takes to work…ugh there’s no way for me to run off to the groccery store to buy some!

After some searching around in my pantry and talking to my friend Julia who is a master level baker of 10 years I was able to make my own brown sugar and baking powder.

For double acting baking powder you need:
  • 2 parts cream of tarter ( you can find this in the baking section of most groccery stores. It is also used as a egg white stablizer)
  • 1 part baking soda

So for example  you would combine 2 tbsp cream of tarter with 1 tbsp baking soda, combine it in a freezer safe resealable continer or bag, label, date it with the date it was created and use it within 6-12 months.

The BEST part of this is that your baking powder is now aluminum free.
Brown sugar is even easier:
For light brown sugar combine
  • 1 tbsp molasses ( I use organic unsulfered) with
  • 1 cup sugar (white or organic dehydrated cane juice)
For dark brown sugar combine
  • 2 tbsp molasses with
  • 1 cup sugar (white or organic dehydrated cane juice.)

With these staple ingredients you will never want for baking powder or brown sugar, and its ALOT cheaper and healtheir to make it yourself!
